What areas do you work in?

I do the majority of my work in Cary/Raleigh and the surrounding communities.

What type of work do you do?

The main focus at Engel Landscape Design is designing the best possible landscape for you and your property. I enjoy working closely with homeowners and contractors throughout the process, from design to installation, to create beautiful outdoor spaces that feels like an extension of your home. I can work with you to design and renovate your existing landscape or to create your new landscape from a blank slate.

What type of work do you not do?

Although I am member of the NALP (national association of landscape professionals), I do not provide bids or quotes for elements that you want installed in your landscape that I did not design. If you are only looking to obtain a price for a new lawn, or some other landscape element (retaining wall, drainage system, or fence) then you might be better off contacting a landscape contractor directly.

What is the difference between a designer and a landscaping contractor?

In general, a landscape designer’s focus is tailoring a unique design to you and your property. While a landscaping contractor’s main focus is the installation itself. My professional designs ensure that your landscape becomes an extension of your home and personality.  Many landscaping Raleigh NC contractors do provide design services but it is usually not the main focus of their operation.

Do you provide free consultations?

I do offer a free phone consultation to discuss if creating a landscape design is right for your project. After we have spoken on the phone, if you feel that a design is right for you, we will schedule an initial on-site consultation. A typically on-site consultation runs about $300 for a 2 hour session. This meeting is about getting to know you, your current space, and your goals for your new landscape. We will explore recommendations on flow and function, appropriate plantings, and hardscape to transform your site.

How much does a design cost?

Like any home improvement project, landscaping can be a considerable investment but one that can add to the overall value of your home. My designs typically begin at $3,000 and increase based on individual needs/wants, the scope of the project, the site, and amenities desired. Having a landscape design is a smart way to protect your overall investment by insuring that all aspect of you new landscape are cohesive and well thought-out before the installation work begins.

You can expect to spend between $8 – $11 a square ft. for a standard landscape project, and $15 – $23 a square ft. for a high-end project.  A typical small 500-1,000 sq. ft. project can range anywhere from $4,000 – $20,000. What if I don’t like the design?

A considerable amount of time is spent getting to know you, learning about your goals and desires and including you as an integral part of the landscape design process. The final landscape design is meant to be unique to you and your property, and unlike any other landscape. The detailed landscape questionnaire is the first step to getting to know you. It acts as a guide to ensure you not only like, but actually love, your new landscape.

I have never worked with a landscape designer before. What should I look for in a designer?

Choosing a landscape designer can be a difficult decision. My best bit of advice is to choose a designer you identify with in terms of their style and personality. Then talk to that person and make sure that he/she listens to you and understands your needs. A great designer merges their expertise and eye with your needs, wants, and resources to create an amazing landscape design.

Should I design all of my yard now or in pieces?

Creating the entire master design plan at once is the wisest choice to assure a cohesive landscape for your property. It can also help you avoid costly mistakes as your new landscape is installed. This landscape master plan can then be divided into phases that can be installed as your budget allows.

What size projects do you do?

Engel Landscape Design handles projects that range from small residential lots to several acre sites. I also provide wonderful additions to existing landscapes as well as comprehensive designs for an entire property. My designs integrate the unique elements of each property with the homeowner’s personal style and taste to come up with creative ways to maximize the beauty and functionality of their outdoor spaces.

Can you work with what I already have?

Keeping your favorite hydrangea or reusing all your sweet smelling gardenias is no problem! Whenever possible, existing plant materials are reused in the new design. It can be both charming and cost effective. My client questionnaire gives you the perfect opportunity to share what you love (and don’t love) about your existing landscape.

Can you design something that I can install myself? Or parts of it myself?

Absolutely! You can choose to install all or part of your landscaping plan yourself. It is true – landscaping can be backbreaking work, but it can also be incredibly gratifying to complete some projects yourself. My Landscape Design Plans include an optional phased installation schedule which gives you the flexibility to choose just how much of you landscape you want professionally installed and within what time frame.

How do I take care of my newly installed landscape?

A newly installed landscape will require regular watering while it establishes over the first couple of years. Even after that you may need to occasionally supplement water during dry periods. Each Design Plan comes with a maintenance guide and plant photos, as well as botanical and common plant names so you are able to care for and enjoy your new landscape for many years.

If we hire you how soon can you start our project?

Most of the time I am able to see clients within a week or two of their initial contact. However, during peak the seasons of Spring and Fall that can vary.  I make every effort to give my clients an accurate estimate of my availability so they can plan accordingly.

Can we meet with you on an evening or a Saturday?

I understand that work and busy schedules may make it difficult to meet during normal business hours. However, because of my demanding schedule Saturday or evening meetings are by appointment-only and are fairly limited.
